Photographer: Rupert Eden
I first took up photography at high school and art college where I developed monochrome prints using traditional darkroom techniques. Filmmaking followed whilst studying Hispanic Studies at Liverpool University where I also acted in a short film and wrote film reviews for the student radio and magazine. This shoot came about through a contract to shoot a new boutique hotel. I shot my first cover story with US Airways Magazine with the same Brazilian model as the Lilo Lounge shoot Carolina when she was 17 – it was her first paid modelling job.
I love to shoot in exotic locations using glamorous scenarios. I am heavily influenced by Italian cinema from the 1970s and 1980s.
My work on fashion is both commercial and personal and usually involves a team of make up and hair and stylist who prep the model then 1 assistant remains during the session.
I am inspired by Italian Neorealism which came about as World War II ended and Benito Mussolini’s government fell, causing the Italian film industry to follow cultural change and social progress in Italy. Its films presented contemporary stories and ideas, and were often shot in the streets because the Cinecittà film studios had been damaged significantly during the war.
I make a living from photography mainly through travel, lifestyle and fashion magazines.
My current clients include Elle Espana, Traveller, Monocle and Wallpaper Magazine.
